1. Start With the Small Stuff

How many items do you have in your home that you haven’t touched in six months or more? Is it old kids’ toys that they’ve outgrown? Is it a few small appliances that you used maybe once or twice, but can’t justify its need? What about those shoes and clothes that have seen better days? Establish a place in the house where you can collect these items to donate them. Get the entire family involved and see who can donate the most. (Warning: Be sure to check the basket before you drop it off–I know my kids sometimes want to donate something that they need!)

2. Know Where Your Lists Are

Whatever your organizational system is, know where it is and who is looking at it. If you use a calendar to keep appointments, be sure the people that need to see it are viewing it. If you are maintaining lists, have others contribute to the list, so everyone is on the same page. A lot of reasons why people fail at organizing is because not everyone is on board or knows where the dock is to participate.

3. Establish Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Routines

When you do something the same way for 21 days in a row, it forms into a habit. Humans are routine-animals by nature, so be sure you are utilizing this instinct for constructive purposes. Make it a point to make your bed every morning, or do one load of laundry a day. De-clutter by organizing the things you need to keep. In the process, you could form the habit of removing items you no longer need or us weekly from a particular space in your home. Your future self will thank you.

4. Make a Motto of Three

Set goals that you know you can maintain. Be sure to jot them down the night before for a fresh start. Usually, three items a day is an excellent place to start. \

You could turn this into a little mantra. For example, pick verbs that you can attach a value to, such as “Clean, Organize, and Have Fun.” Then choose items to place under those categories every day like for clean: make it the kitchen; for organizing: make it the drawers in the kitchen; have fun: bake something and share it with friends! Build these three items into your daily routine, and we will find a cleaner, more organized home in no time!

5. Where Does it Fit In?

Before you bring new things into your home, be sure you have decluttered. You could either donate your items or put them in storage. Some things need to be thrown away or recycled. Regardless of where you put the extra baggage, please don’t bring any more in until you have a place for everything and everything in its place.
