organize school supplies at home

Belleair Storage offers tips on how to organize school supplies at home for homework and school projects. These practical tips will help you better serve your children during extended school closures, remote learning, and the regular school year. The whole family can get involved and keep up with staying organized at home!

Declutter Unusable School Supplies

The first step in any organizing task is to declutter what you don’t want or need since there is no point in organizing clutter. This what we recommend: dispose of pens and markers that have dried up or no longer work. Empty bottles of glue, broken scissors, and overly crumpled up paper should also go.

Of course, we can use many school supplies from year to year, so don’t get rid of anything that is still useful just because it’s old. The older school supplies from the end of the school year are the perfect types of things to use in your home during the next school year. Therefore, allow your kids to have the appropriate supplies at home for homework and projects without breaking the bank. We all know how expensive these supplies can be!

Get The Necessary School Supplies For Your Home

Once you’ve decluttered any unusable supplies, it’s time to make sure your child is ready to tackle his or her homework and school projects. Homework time can be hard enough without also having to search for a pencil with an eraser, or a glue stick to paste a piece of paper onto a worksheet. Having the necessary school supplies organized will help reduce the amount of time it takes to complete assignments.

Your child’s school should provide a list of the supplies your child needs to take to the school for your child’s classroom, but you also need to have some of these same items at home.

School Supplies Organizing Principles

Once you’ve got all the supplies, it can seem like a lot of stuff, and it can quickly become a mess if you’re not careful. Here are some general guiding principles you should keep in mind when organizing and storing school supplies.

Keep School Supplies in One Area in the Home

Keeping all of the school supplies together in one area is helpful for both you and your kids. He or she will know where to find what he or she needs without asking you where the items are. This is because all of these materials are together in the same place. Once the homework is complete, cleaning up is more relaxed. This is because your child can put everything back in the same place where he or she found it.

Be sure you’re not overwhelmed with supplies in one location. If you like or need to stock up on a lot of school supplies, you don’t have to keep every pencil ready for your child to use. Instead, keep a good selection of supplies together that they’ll need. For example, a couple of pencils and pens, markers, scissors, and glue are good to have on the grab. You can store the excess supplies in an out of the way location. Then, replenish the smaller selection as your child uses up the supplies from the storage area.

Choose a Convenient Location to Store the Supplies

Think about where your child typically does his or her homework or school projects. If possible, keep the supplies close to that location. Again, this helps your child quickly access the supplies and, when he or she finishes, he or she can put them away.

Keep Supplies Neat and Easy to Find

If you put all the different supplies together in a big pile, they will get jumbled and disorganized quickly. With whatever organizational method you choose, make sure there is a way to keep the different categories and types of supplies divided and separated. For example, keep supplies in small, separate containers, with drawer dividers, or in separate organizer drawers.

With these organizing principles in mind, you will hopefully have a smooth transition back into the school year.
