The coronavirus outbreak is forcing people to think differently about the items they need and what they need to store. Just like during hurricane season, it’s OK to stockpile—not hoard—goods during a quarantine. Therefore, we are here to give you some advice on pandemic prepared supplies.

As Floridians, we are used to preparing for the worst of the storm. However, how many of us can claim we knew what to expect during a pandemic?

Stay at Home Initiative Now in Florida

With the new “Stay at Home” initiative in Florida, more Floridians are preparing for an extended stay at home. However, experts are warning against panic buying and hoarding of products such as toilet paper, water, and cleaning supplies.

But there is nothing wrong with preparing for several days at home either because you chose to self-quarantine or if the law requires it. In these uncertain times, have pandemic prepared supplies is a necessary component to maintain your safety.

Some smart procedures to help stop the spread—washing your hands, sneezing into your sleeves, disinfecting items—is well and good, but what about pandemic preparedness supplies?

American Red Cross spokesman Anthony Tornetta says, “Buying some extra disinfectant, toiletries, laundry detergent—these are things you can use later. That is not necessarily a bad thing.”

Checklist for Pandemic Preparedness

Health and emergency officials have long recommended homes have an emergency preparedness kit to get you through several days at home without power, but what about a pandemic? It’s a little different during a quarantine.

Here’s a checklist of some pandemic prepared supplies you need now for the next 30 days:

Food

Eat fresh fruits and vegetables first, as they will likely spoil over 14 days. You can also cook and freeze these foods. We also recommend canned foods that have a long storage life and need little or no cooking. Frozen foods are a possibility, too, especially since there is still power during a quarantine. We also recommend peanut butter, jelly, crackers, nuts, trail mix, dried fruits, granola bars, and staples like sugar, pepper, salt, and condiments.

Water and Liquids

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests you have plenty of fluids, such as bottled water and supply of fluids with electrolytes, such as Pedialyte or Gatorade.

Hygiene Products

Be sure you have toothpaste and additional toiletries, toilet paper, laundry detergent, disinfectant, and other items you deem necessary to maintain your hygiene. Don’t forget feminine products for women or diapers for your babies or infants.

Medical & Sanitation Items

First aid kits are a must-have for any emergency. Sanitation items include bleach, rubbing alcohol, paper towels, or clean cloths.

Other items

Some board games, playing cards, video games, cards, toys, books, magazines, and other fun items are great to have around to keep the family occupied.
